Today, I want to cover the worst low-carb foods or “keto-friendly” foods. If you’re wondering what to avoid on keto, these are some of the worst keto foods.

Keto-friendly foods are really just low-carb foods. But, just because something is low-carb, or keto-friendly doesn’t necessarily mean it’s healthy.

Worst low-carb foods:

• Soy protein isolate
• Casein
• Maltitol
• Aspartame
• Processed cheese
• Common processed meats (lunch meats, hot dogs, bacon)
• Rancid nuts
• Margarine
• Iceberg lettuce
• Fast-food burger/chicken (dirty keto)
• Pork rinds – MSG
• Vegetable oils
• Corn fiber
• Farm-raised fish
• Low-fat dairy

I recently had a question from someone wanting to know more about the spleen. So, in this quick video, I’m going to cover a little bit about what the spleen is and what it does.

What is the spleen? The spleen is located underneath the right rib cage, underneath the diaphragm. It’s about 2.8-5.5 inches or 7-14 centimeters.

What does the spleen do?

• It recycles blood and iron (primary function)
• It acts as a blood reserve
• It enhances your immune system
• It kills bacteria

In this video, we’re going to talk all about sugar and how it may be hiding in more of your foods than you think.

There are hidden sugars everywhere. Maybe you’re not consuming white sugar or table sugar, so you think you’re not consuming any sugar at all. But, sugar can go by many different names. The sugar just might be packaged in a healthy way so that it doesn’t even appear to be sugar.

Types of sugar that appear to be healthy, but really aren’t:

• Real cane sugar
• Brown sugar
• Sugar in the raw
• Coconut sugar
• Organic cane sugar
• Fruit juice concentrate
• “Made with real fruit”
• “Made with whole grains”
• Brown rice sugar
• Beet sugar
• Date sugar
• Honey
• Maple syrup
• Agave nectar
• Barley malt

A few more things to consider:

• Carbs – Fiber (something may not have high sugar, but it may still have high carbs)
• Serving size
• Sugar + protein + fat (spikes insulin, glycation)
• Yogurt/breakfast bar (typically filled with sugar)
• Natural does not always mean healthy

Should I Be Concerned with Goitrogenic Foods?

In this video, I want to cover goitrogens and thyroid function. We’re going to talk about what goitrogenic foods are and if you should be concerned about them.

What are goitrogenic foods? – It is a food that can cause a goiter (an enlarged thyroid).

The thyroid is in the base of the neck, and it can swell up if it doesn’t have iodine. If someone consumes food that blocks iodine, it can ultimately:

1. Cause more thyroid hormone to be released
2. Cause the thyroid to get bigger

Goitrogenic food list:

• Casava
• Corn
• Cabbage
• Canola
• Soybeans
• Cruciferous Vegetables
• Almonds
• Cherries
• Strawberries
• Spinach
• Sweet Potatoes

Out of these goitrogenic foods, I don’t recommend consuming:

• Casava
• Corn
• Canola
• Soybeans
• Cherries
• Sweet Potatoes

Out of the foods that are fine to consume, cruciferous vegetables could potentially create thyroid problems if:

• You are sensitive to these foods
• You consume large amounts of cruciferous vegetables too frequently
• You have a hypothyroid problem
• You have an iodine deficiency

If you’re concerned about goitrogenic foods or if you have one of the problems above, you need to:

• Take sea kelp
• Don’t consume these foods on a daily basis

Some of the best sources of iodine to protect you from a deficiency that could damage your thyroid health are:

• Shellfish
• Fish
• Sea kelp (not large amounts)

How to Reverse Insulin Resistance

Take Dr. Berg’s Free Keto Mini-Course: http://pxlme.me/-i717vtY or go here: http://bit.ly/2RmaFDS

http://bit.ly/2DH0d6o

In this video, I want to talk about a question I received from someone who was wondering how to reverse insulin resistance.

What is insulin resistance? – It’s a condition where the cells are no longer absorbing insulin. Without insulin, the cells can’t get fuel, so they’re starving. This makes you crave carbohydrates. A signal is then sent to the pancreas telling it to make more insulin. The average person with Insulin resistance has 5-7 times more insulin than normal.

High levels of insulin create:

• Starved cells
• High blood sugar
• Damage in the body

What causes insulin resistance? – Overexposure to insulin (chronic carbs and frequent eating)

How do we fix this problem? – The prolonged absence of insulin.

If you don’t fix insulin resistance:
• You’re not going to get weight loss
• You’re going to be hungry all of the time

In my opinion, it takes about 3-8+ months to reverse insulin resistance. My guess is that healthy keto with intermittent fasting is responsible for 90%+ of improvements. Healthy keto provides the key nutrients you need to help speed up the process.

If you want to enhance your results you can:

• Add exercise
• Lower your stress
• Get more sleep
• Get plenty of nutrients (zinc, vitamin D, chromium, potassium, magnesium)

How do you know if insulin resistance is going away?

1. Your hunger is going down
2. You’re losing belly fat
3. Your blood pressure is going down
4. Your blood sugars are good
5. No dawn phenomenon
6. You have more energy
7. You’re satisfied when you eat

How Long Do I Have to Do Keto and Intermittent Fasting?

Today, I want to answer a question someone recently asked, “how long do I have to do keto and intermittent fasting?”

The ketogenic diet is a lifelong commitment. Healthy keto with intermittent fasting will work while you do it, but the benefits will stop if you stop. You might see some awesome keto diet results, or intermittent fasting results and think it’s ok to stop. But, the long term effects of keto are so beneficial, you really don’t want to stop.

The purpose of doing the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting is for so much more than just weight loss. Doing keto long term is a way of eating to minimize health problems.

You will eventually build up your health reserve, and you will be able to go off of the program here and there. But, there are no phases of the ketogenic diet. After you reach your keto weight loss goal, instead of adding in carbs, you can add in more calories and more fat.

There are multiple incredible benefits of healthy keto, ketosis, and intermittent fasting. Ketones are a more efficient fuel that your brain and heart prefer. But, one of the biggest problems out there right now is high insulin. Healthy keto with intermittent fasting will help you reduce your insulin, which will benefit your:

• Heart
• Liver
• Brain
• Hormones
• Immune System
• Nerves
• Kidneys
• Eyes

Keto and Intermittent Fasting Made Me Depressed

Today, I want to do a quick video to answer a question someone had about the ketogenic diet and depression. This person had started the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting and was feeling depressed. Why would this happen?

What causes depression on keto? – It may be because of a nutritional deficiency.

Healthy keto and intermittent fasting are supposed to make your mood go up. If you’re having depression while on keto, or depression while doing intermittent fasting, you may have nutritional deficiencies. If you have any type of subclinical nutrition deficiency, it will be magnified when you do intermittent fasting, and sometimes when you do keto as well.

Nutrition deficiencies that can cause depression while on keto:

1. Low zinc
2. Low vitamin D
3. Low B12

90 Percent of Hypothyroidism is Hashimoto’s

The great majority (90-95%) of hypothyroid cases are Hashimoto’s. Let’s talk about what Hashimoto’s is and why this is the case.

Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune condition. This means that there are cells that are attacking the thyroid, which keeps the thyroid inflamed. Hashimoto’s is actually more of an immune problem than a thyroid problem.

A few Hashimoto’s symptoms are:

• Stress
• Anxiety
• Depression

You can pretty much have any thyroid symptom, but when you have Hashimoto’s, you can also have symptoms of hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid).

What causes this?

• A high percentage of people with Hashimoto’s developed it 3-8 months postpartum.
• There are 5-8 times more women that have this condition than men.

This tells us there is a problem with estrogen. Estrogen is a very powerful antioxidant. Many times, women have lower amounts of estrogen postpartum. This can set them up for getting this autoimmune condition.

A few more things that could contribute to this problem are:

• Gluten
• A zinc deficiency
• Low vitamin D

Action Steps:

• Take around 300mg of selenium per day
• Take iodine only if you’re deficient
• Start healthy keto and intermittent fasting
