It’s interesting that there are actually certain vegetables with virtually zero carbs. I’m talking about net carbs because fiber is a carb. But, fiber doesn’t affect blood sugars. These vegetables are high in phytonutrients and have all sorts of amazing properties. Of course, the lower the carb, the more keto-friendly it is too.

The only time that consuming vegetables may not be a good idea is if you had a serious gut inflammatory situation. But, for most people, I believe it’s good to consume foods that are as low on the carbohydrate scale as possible.

Vegetables with almost zero carbs (1 cup):
Broccoli:
Carb — 1.1g
Fiber — 1.1g
Sugar — 0
Net carb — 0
Calories — 8.8

Baby beet greens:

Endive:

Collard greens:

Romaine lettuce:

Let’s talk about the health benefits of cacao and dark chocolate. Cacao is the raw bean that’s fermented and processed into chocolate. Cacao and dark chocolate are both loaded with phytonutrients (polyphenols and flavonols). They actually have higher amounts than blueberries or açaí berries.

There is a small amount of caffeine in cacao and dark chocolate, as well as a good amount of theobromine (a stimulant). So, if you have cacao or dark chocolate later in the day or before bed, it may keep you up.

I consume a little bit of chocolate on a regular basis, but I always consume chocolate that is organic and doesn’t contain sugar. A few brands I like are Lily’s Sweets and Choc Zero.

Cacao and dark chocolate are high in oxalates. So, if you’re at risk for kidney stones, you may not want to consume either one.

Potential health benefits of dark chocolate and cacao:
1. Decreased blood pressure
2. Increased HDL and decreased LDL (especially oxidized LDL)
3. Decreased risk of heart disease (decreased endothelial dysfunction)
4. Decreased cortisol and adrenaline
5. Decreased risk of certain cancers
6. Decreased insulin (may improve insulin resistance)
7. Decreased risk of strokes
8. Better mood and increased serotonin (it can act as an antidepressant)
9. Increased physical performance
10. Increased skin circulation, texture, hydration
11. Decreased metabolic syndrome

3:01 How to bulletproof your immune system

In this video, we’re going to talk about why 97% of overweight people gain the weight back after reaching their dieting goals.

I believe this is because most dieters don’t have a second goal. You can’t expect to stay at a healthy weight and not continue to eat healthy foods and exercise.

Once you reach your desired weight, you can’t just revert to an unhealthy lifestyle.

You have to give your body what it wants and needs, and it will give you what you want in return.

What does your body really want? It wants real, healthy foods that are full of nutrients—not processed junk and empty calories.

In summary, you don’t need a weight loss goal. Instead, you need a get-healthy goal. If you continually work on building up your health, you will hit your weight loss goals naturally.

Keep in mind that carbohydrate cravings are not natural. They only begin after you start eating refined carbs. When you get healthy, you will find that your cravings for carbs go away.

In this video, we’re going to talk about selenium. Selenium is a trace mineral. This means you only need small amounts of it, but it’s very important. Selenium helps you convert T4 to T3 (the active form of the thyroid hormone). A selenium deficiency can lead to symptoms of hypothyroid. Your DNA also needs selenium to be created.

Foods rich in selenium:
• Brazil nuts
• Tuna
• Shrimp
• Sardines
• Sea kelp

If you consume foods high in selenium, but you’re experiencing selenium deficiency symptoms, it could be because of a few things, including:
• You have intestinal absorption problems
• You had gastric bypass surgery
• You’re over the age of 90
• You’re on statins

Symptoms of a selenium deficiency:
1. Glutathione deficiency (can lead to heart problems)
2. Infertility
3. Myocardial necrosis
4. Muscle weakness
5. Mood problems, anxiety, and confusion
6. Fatigue and brain fog
7. Hair loss
8. Low sperm count

I’m reading a very interesting book called “Hooked” by Michael Moss. In this book, he talks about the brain on processed foods, and I want to share a little bit about this.

This book is really about how much more addicting processed foods can be than alcohol, smoking, or even drugs. The speed at which the sugar touches your tongue and connects to the reward circuitry of your brain is about 600 milliseconds. This is 20 times faster than if you were to smoke a cigarette and have nicotine enter the brain.

Apparently, some food companies have even suppressed some of the research on sugar. Not only that, but they’ve influenced various laws to prevent being sued for side effects that occur from consuming processed foods. In the 70s, food companies even started buying up the diet industry.

I believe processed foods and sugar fit into the category of addictions. There are certain criteria that must be met to diagnose addiction or substance use disorder. If you meet 2-3 of the criteria, you have a mild substance use disorder. If you meet 4-5, this is considered a moderate substance use disorder. If you meet 6 or more, you have a severe substance use disorder.

The criteria includes:

1. Hazardous use
Is the substance dangerous to yourself or others? Can you overdose on it?

2. Social or interpersonal problems related to use
Are there relationship problems or conflicts with others related to use?

3. Neglected major roles
Failing to meet responsibility at work, school, or home because of substance use.

4. Withdrawal
When you stop using the substance, you experience withdrawal symptoms.

5. Tolerance
You’ve built up a tolerance to the substance, so you have to do more to get the same effect.

6. Use larger amounts or use the substance for longer periods of time

7. Repeated attempts to control use or quit
You’ve tried to cut back or quit entirely but have not been successful.

8. Much time spent using
You dedicate a lot of time to the substance or eating the processed food.

9. Physical or psychological problems related to use
Your substance abuse has lead to physical health problems, such as liver damage or lung cancer, or psychological problems, such as depression or anxiety.

10. Giving up on activities
You’ve stopped doing some of the activities you once enjoyed in order to use the substance.

11. Cravings
You experience cravings for the substance.
