Today I want to cover the difference between a gallstone and a kidney stone and how they develop to begin with.

The most common type of kidney stone is the calcium oxalate stone. The urine is becoming super concentrated, and the oxalates are forming with the calcium. Certain foods, even keto-friendly foods, are high in oxalates.

Foods high in oxalates:
• Spinach
• Almonds
• Black tea
• Beets
• Beet tops
• Chocolate

How to help minimize the risk of forming a calcium oxalate stone:
• Drink plenty of fluids (at least 2.5 liters of fluid every day)
• Potassium citrate (add lemon juice to your water)

Other types of kidney stones that are less common:
• Calcium phosphate
• Struvite
• Uric acid
• Cystine

Gallstones are completely different. They can be caused by a lack of bile. Over 80% of gallstones are cholesterol stones, which form because of supersaturated cholesterol. Typically, the cholesterol is supersaturated because of a lack of bile.

A few causes of a bile deficiency:
• Damage to the liver
• Low-fat diets
• High insulin
• High cortisol
• High estrogen

How to help minimize the risk of gallstones:
• Keep insulin in check
• Keep stress down (cortisol)
• Keep estrogen low
• Keep enough bile
• Take purified bile salts (if you’re at risk for getting gallstones or if you have liver damage)

20% of gallstones are calcium stones. Those are primarily related to taking calcium supplements, specifically calcium carbonate.

What could potentially happen if you completely stopped eating for seven days? In past videos, I’ve said that the most weight a person could lose in one week is about 2 pounds (0.9kg). But that’s if someone is eating throughout the week. So, what could happen if someone fasted for seven days?

If you start cutting carbs, you could start losing a lot of fluid. Initially, a person could easily lose 13 pounds (5.89kg) in one week. This depends on how much water weight you have.

One pound of fat is 3500 calories. An average person might burn roughly 2000 calories in a day. So, in theory, if everything goes perfectly, a person could lose 0.5-0.7 pounds per day while fasting. This would come out to just under 5 pounds (2.2kg) per week with fasting.

But, there are a lot of variables that can affect this, including:
• Exercise
• Stress
• Sleep
• Age
• Metabolism
• History of consuming a lot of carbs
• Health issues

When you start fasting, you can stimulate growth hormone. Growth hormone protects against the loss of protein. Typically, the body doesn’t use protein as fuel. It uses the fat fuel until that’s gone, then it uses muscle.

Let’s say someone is a bodybuilder, or they have a good amount of muscle on their body, and they’re exercising. But after they start the week fast, they don’t exercise. Potentially, their muscles could shrink because it’s the exercise that keeps the muscles stimulated and growing.

A good indicator to know if you’re fasting correctly is being able to exercise without feeling too weak and tired. If you’re fasting, but you don’t have any energy, and you can’t do intense exercise, you may need more electrolytes.

It’s also important to make sure you’re taking enough sea salt regardless of whether or not you’re eating. Green powder drinks, B vitamins (nutritional yeast), and trace minerals may also be beneficial while fasting.

Some people think they need to load up on carbs to spike insulin to help their muscles grow. But, insulin comes with a package. And, insulin is also triggered by protein. So, a better solution may be to have more protein instead of carbs. If you’re trying to lose weight, this isn’t a good idea. But if you’re trying to build muscle, it may be a better option.

2:22 How to bulletproof your immune system

In this video, we’re going to talk about a loss of smell and what you can do about it.

There are multiple types of loss of smell:
• Anosmia – Total loss of smell
• Dysosmia – Distorted sense of smell
• Hyposmia – Reduced ability to smell

The potential causes for a loss of smell include:
• Infections (especially covid-19)
• Injury
• Allergies

The key trace mineral that supports smell is zinc. If you have a zinc deficiency, you can lose your sense of smell. If zinc doesn’t help, what can you do?

Well, let’s talk about what’s involved in your sense of smell. The olfactory nerve or bulb is the brain tissue responsible for processing the sense of smell. You have around 10 million receptors in each sinus that communicate with the olfactory bulb and the brain.

If there is an injury to the olfactory bulb due to trauma, infection, or allergies, this can lead to problems with your smell.

The best nutrients to support the olfactory bulb are:
• Zinc
• Vitamin B1 (benfotiamine)
• Alpha-lipoic acid

In this video, we’re going to answer the question, can you get fat on too much protein?

When you consume protein, you trigger two hormones: insulin and glucagon. These are opposing hormones. While insulin stops fat burning, glucagon increases fat burning. This is why consuming too much protein does not cause you to put on fat on keto.

So if you’re replacing carbs with protein, you are most likely not going to put on more weight.

However, too much protein can…
• Slow down ketosis
• Cause sleepiness
• Cause bloating/constipation
• Lower sleep quality
• Cause indigestion
• Increase kidney or liver damage

Adding in intermittent fasting can help lower these side effects.

1:05 Benefits of MCT oil

Today we’re going to talk about MCT oil and whether or not it will lead to higher cholesterol levels.

No, I don’t believe MCT oil will raise a person’s cholesterol. There are even some studies that show that it may lower cholesterol because it increases bile flow. Bile is essential in dealing with excess cholesterol. It can help break it down and push it out of the body.

Virgin cod liver oil is actually 55% MCT oil. Virgin cod liver oil may also potentially lower a person’s cholesterol.

After you consume MCT oil, it breaks down quickly, goes to the liver, and it turns into ketones to give you energy. MCT oil may be helpful, especially in the transition phase as you get into ketosis, to help you fast longer.

It may help you feel more satisfied, give you more energy, and reduce brain fog. It may also help you to be able to exercise for longer.

5:29 Bulletproof your immune system course

In this video, we’re going to talk about liver damage and estrogen in men. Why can liver damage make a man estrogen dominant?

There are many men out there with liver damage without knowing it. One of the first symptoms is too much estrogen. Any time you build up too much estrogen, your testosterone level drops.

Signs of high estrogen, low testosterone, and liver damage include:
• Gynecomastia (breast tissue formation)
• Palmar erythema (red palms)
• Decreased libido
• Erectile dysfunction
• Spider naevi

Liver cirrhosis happens slowly over time. It may start as inflammation, then develop into a fatty liver, and then turn into scar tissue.

The symptoms above can start way before you actually develop full-blown cirrhosis.

Alcohol consumption, insulin resistance, diabetes, and hepatitis can all cause serious liver damage.

When your liver is damaged, you have impaired detoxification. So the liver is not able to get rid of the build-up of estrogen.

Liver damage can also alter neurotransmitters, which can throw off your balance of dopamine and prolactin—this can lower your testosterone.

Being obese or overweight can also cause low testosterone because fat cells make estrogen.

Aromatase is another enzyme in the body that can convert androgens into estrogen.

Don’t wait until you’re diagnosed with a fatty liver or cirrhosis to improve your diet and support a healthy body.

The best remedies for high estrogen in men are:
• Green tea
• Cruciferous vegetables
• Milk thistle
• Stinging nettle root

In this video, we’re going to talk about how to really become fat-adapted.

It’s good to have the right expectations about how you’re going to achieve your health and weight loss goals on keto. It can take time to become fully fat-adapted and begin to lose weight.

Before you give up and quit keto, check out these points, so you know what to expect.

If you aren’t familiar with keto already, the goal is to go from burning sugar (glucose) for fuel to burning fat (ketones) for fuel.

When you first start keto, here’s what to expect:
• Around 3 days in, you begin burning ketones (instead of glucose)
• Around 1-2 weeks, you lose a lot of water weight
• Around 3 weeks, weight loss may slow down temporarily
• Around 4-12 weeks, most people become fully fat-adapted (weight loss increases)
• Around 12 months, athletes become fully fat-adapted

How do you know if you’re fat-adapted on keto? Here are the signs:
• You can exercise without a dip in energy
• You can go a long time without feeling hungry
• You don’t feel tired after meals
• You can hold your bladder through the night

To speed up the keto fat-adaptation timeline, get your carbs as low as you possibly can and increase your fat consumption.

2:59 What is Healthy Keto?
3:22 How to bulletproof your immune system

In this video, we’re going to talk about the difference between lazy keto and dirty keto. Take a look.

– Lazy keto –
Lazy keto is when you do not count calories or ketones. You primarily focus on counting carbohydrates—and keeping them below 50 grams per day.

Lazy keto also involves consuming a moderate amount of protein (roughly 3-8 oz per meal) and consuming high amounts of fat (without focusing on the quality of fat).

– Dirty keto –
Dirty keto completely ignores the quality of your nutrients. Those who do dirty keto often eat at fast-food restaurants and consume processed cheese and meats.

Dirty keto may also include a lot of MSG, low-nutrient foods, non-organic ingredients, high amounts of omega-6 fatty acids, and trans fats.

On dirty keto, you might consume a heavily-processed fast-food burger without the bun, which—although keto-friendly—contains a lot of unhealthy ingredients.

Overall, the difference between lazy keto and dirty keto is that dirty keto doesn’t focus on the quality of food at all. Those on dirty keto may consume some very unhealthy foods.

The food that is the highest in vitamin E is sunflower seeds. Other things like wheat germ oil have more vitamin E but, they’re not keto-friendly. Sunflower seeds are also loaded with vitamin B1. However, roasted sunflower seeds have about 80% less vitamin E.

Sunflower seeds are rich in vitamins and minerals, such as:
• Vitamin E
• Vitamin B1
• Magnesium
• Manganese
• Zinc
• Copper
• Selenium
• Vitamin B6

Other foods rich in vitamin E:
• Almonds
• Spinach
• Swiss chard
• Avocado
• Hazelnut
• Peanuts
• Leafy greens

The reason behind a vitamin E deficiency isn’t necessarily that the person is not consuming enough foods that contain vitamin E. Instead, they may be consuming foods like refined grains that are depleting their vitamin E.

Potential benefits of vitamin E:
• Improved fertility
• Decreased inflammation
• It can act as a natural blood thinner
• It can decrease the risk of chest pain, angina, and other heart problems
• Decreased hot flashes

In this video, we’re going to talk about the best remedy for sunspots.

How can you get rid of sunspots on your skin? I got this question from a viewer on YouTube, and I wanted to make a quick video on this topic.

Let’s start by talking about what sunspots are.

There are tiny cells in your skin called melanocytes, and they produce a pigment called melanin. Melanin gives you the color of your skin.

If you’re exposed to too much direct sunlight, you can develop small blemishes or dark spots on your skin.

The best remedy for sunspots is licorice extract. You want to get this as a liquid tincture that is alcohol-free.

You can add two drops of licorice extract to any skin cream or toner and apply it topically.

You can also apply this underneath your eyes if you want to get rid of dark circles around your eyes.

Licorice extract is a powerful natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.

This remedy tends to start working within just a couple of days.

Give this sunspots remedy a try, and let me know how it works for you.

1:15 Lycopene benefits

Today I’m going to cover the interesting benefits of lycopene. Lycopene is a phytonutrient.

Lycopene is in certain foods, including:
• Tomatoes
• Grapefruit
• Goji berries
• Gac
• Asparagus
• Parsley
• Basil

The ability of lycopene to be absorbed and concentrated in the body occurs when you heat the substance. For example, if you consumed tomato paste, you would get about 4x more lycopene than if you consumed raw tomatoes. Olive oil increases the absorption even more. Lycopene is a fat-soluble phytonutrient, so it requires bile. Adding fat can help support the absorption.

Potential benefits of lycopene:
1. It can be good for an enlarged prostate
2. It may help support blood pressure
3. It can act as a blood thinner
4. It can help in the regulation of blood lipids
5. It’s a powerful antioxidant
6. It can act as an anti-inflammatory
7. It helps boost the detoxification enzymes of the liver
8. It may have a certain anti-tumor property
9. It can help protect against things like hydrogen peroxide

4:03 How to bulletproof your immune system

In this video, we’re going to talk about the evolution and origin of vitamin D.

Phytoplankton has been on the earth for around 750 million years. They are exposed to sunlight, which they use to create vitamin D.

There’s a compound in the environment called squalene. This is an ancient old found in rocks, plants, and animals. Squalene is a precursor for cholesterol and steroid hormones.

Vitamin D protects DNA from damage caused by the sun’s UV radiation. Before the earth had an ozone layer, this was crucial for survival.

Over time, this mechanism was transferred up the food chain—first into fatty fish, such as salmon.

Life forces took advantage of an abundant mineral known as calcium. They used calcium for neuromuscular and cellular communication, skeletal structure, and as an electrolyte.

Vitamin D is crucial for the absorption and utilization of calcium. Vitamin D helps the small intestine absorb calcium by 20x. Without vitamin D, you would be deficient in calcium, causing issues such as:
• Osteoporosis
• Osteopenia
• Osteomalacia
• Back pain
• Scoliosis
• Flat feet
• Hunchback
• Rickets

Calcium can accumulate in your arteries and joints if you don’t have enough vitamin D (and vitamin K2), which can lead to cardiovascular disease and arthritis.

As you can see, vitamin D is an incredibly important part of our survival and health.

Are you consuming hidden carbs without knowing? Here’s what you need to know about reading food labels.

Timestamps
0:00 Tricky food labels
0:20 Understanding food labels
6:50 Bulletproof your immune system *free course!

When you’re on a ketogenic diet, one of the most important things is to read and understand labels. This video will give you some basics on the most important things to look for on a food label.

You’ll see the nutrition facts on the label, including the serving size and servings per container or unit. The entire label is based on the serving size, not the servings for the entire container. If you eat more than the serving size, you have to multiply the number of servings you consumed by the amount of sugar or carbs on the label to get the real amount of sugar or carbs you consumed.

Sugar, total carbs, and fiber are important to look at. You have to take away the fiber from the total carbs to get the net carbs (total carbs – fiber = net carbs). Fiber doesn’t spike insulin. You want the sugar to be as low as possible.

When you do keto, you want to keep your net carbs between 20-50g per day. But, the type of carbs is also important. You don’t want to get your carbs from something that is high on the glycemic index. You want low-glycemic carbohydrates.

A few ingredients to avoid:
• Maltodextrin
• Dextrose
• Corn fiber
• Tapioca
• Wheat
• Gluten
• Sugar

When it comes to the ingredients at the bottom of the label, the first ingredient is typically the majority of the product.

Something else to keep in mind is that modified food starch is MSG. Also, if something says “olive oil (or soy, canola, coconut, cottonseed oil),” they now have the option to use whatever oil they want.

It’s not just the quantity of carbs you have on keto that matters. It’s also the quality of the carbs that matter. In this video, I’m going to cover in detail the types of carbs that you should and shouldn’t have on keto. It’s important to not only consider the amount of sugar in foods but also the carbs and starch.

A few things to keep in mind:
• Fiber will buffer starches and sugar to a certain degree.

• It’s important to consider the amounts of starch in foods and whether or not it’s heated. You don’t want to consume starch that has been heated or processed.

• The more you cook a starch, the higher it is on the glycemic index. For example, a raw potato would be fine. But, cooked potatoes are not keto-friendly.

• Even though you could typically have 50g of carbs per day on keto, you want to consume low-glycemic carbs. You don’t want to consume 50g of actual sugar because it will spike your blood sugar.

A few examples:

Kale — (keto-friendly)
Amount: 1 cup
Total carb: 4g
Fiber: 2g
Net carb: 2g
Sugar: 0g

Soda — (not keto-friendly)
Amount: 1 can

Strawberries — (fine in small amounts)
Amount: 1/2 cup

Net carb: 5g
Sugar: 3g

Carrots — (fine in small amounts)
Amount: 2/3 cup

Healthy Ketogenic Diet and Intermittent Fasting:

Here’s what you really need to know about epilepsy and the ketogenic diet.

Today, we’re going to talk about epilepsy and the ketogenic diet. In 1923 Dr. Russell Wilder noticed that a low-carb diet had the potential to reduce a person’s seizures by 50%. 15% of the group completely got rid of their seizures.

This actually started the classic ketogenic diet for epilepsy. Of course, the keto diet has since evolved into different ratios of fat, protein, and carbohydrates. The higher the ratio of fat you have to protein and carbs, the more you’ll be able to get into ketosis.

It’s not really known why the keto diet may help with seizures, but there are a few theories.

Theory #1: Keto improves the stability of synapses between neurons.
Theory #2: Ketones have anticonvulsant effects.
Theory #3 Keto decreases brain inflammation.

There are a few potential side effects a person could experience after going on the classic keto diet. I think this could be because the classic ketogenic diet focuses more on macros than it does on the quality of foods the person is eating.

If someone wanted to try doing the keto diet for epilepsy, they might want to tweak it a little bit to make it healthier. I would try to do organic, grass-fed, wild-caught, pasture-raised foods.

A few more tips to make the classic keto diet healthier:
1. Add intermittent fasting
2. Avoid vegetable oils
3. Consume more vegetables and salads (with olive oil is even better)
4. Take purified bile salts
5. Take whole food vitamins
6. Take electrolytes, including potassium citrate
7. Take sea salt (1-1.5 tsp.)

Would you know what to do if you thought someone might be showing the first sign of a stroke? Here’s what you need to know.

Today we’re going to talk about what you may want to do at the first sign of a stroke.

Signs of a stroke:
• Numbness on one side of the body
• Confusion
• Loss of facial function
• Loss of arm function
• Loss of leg function
• Slurred speech
• Trouble walking

An easy way to remember important signs of a stroke:
*F.A.S.T.
• Face — Smile (Does one side droop?)
• Arm — Raise both arms (Does one arm drop down?)
• Speak — Repeat a phrase a few times (Can they speak? Is their speech slurred?)
• Time — Call 911 (you have about a 3-4 hour window to get them to a hospital)

A few things that may help prevent a stroke:
1. Fix insulin resistance
One of the most important things to do to help prevent a stroke is to correct your diet and normalize your insulin.

2. Consume a diet high in potassium
Potassium helps support the vascular system and may inhibit clotting.

3. Vitamin E (Tocopherols)
Tocopherols might be one of the best antioxidants to help support the brain and fight free radical damage.

4. Ketones (the keto diet, MCT oil, or exogenous ketones)
Ketones may support the brain.

5. Intermittent fasting
May support the cardiovascular system, the inside of the lining of the arteries, and the brain.

6. DHA (omega-3 fatty acids)
Omega-3 fatty acids may help thin the blood, repair brain damage, and protect the brain against clotting.

7. Garlic
May act as a natural blood thinner.

8. Exercise
May provide more oxygen to the brain cells.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy may help create improvements if you’ve had a stroke. This may help by forcing oxygen deep into the brain to potentially help repair it.

Some people are now saying that keto causes bone loss. Is it true?

A study saying that keto causes bone loss is concerning some people. So today, let’s take a deeper look at that study.

A few red flags about this study:
• The study was done on 30 world-class professional athletes.
• The study was only done for three weeks.
• The study didn’t include what they ate.

Professional athletes are usually carb-burning machines. They’re used to carbs, and if they’re going to try to adapt to the keto diet, it’s going to take more than three weeks. However, once adapted, their bodies can potentially burn 3x more fat than other people.

The study also showed impaired bone modeling and remodeling. But, it didn’t show a loss of bone mineral density or strength. The impaired bone modeling and remodeling don’t actually mean osteoporosis or osteopenia.

We also don’t even know exactly what the diet was that these people were consuming. Was it really keto? Was it dirty keto? Did they have enough vitamin K2 (which helps build bone)? Did they have enough vitamin D3, calcium, or vitamin C? We don’t know.

To build bone, I believe you need the combination of those vitamins and minerals, and you would also need to keep your stress low and your hormones in check.

Another long-term study performed on menopausal women indicated no effect on bone. Be sure to read studies thoroughly before jumping to any conclusions.
