Today I want to explain what causes pale-colored stool and what it means.

There is a chain reaction in the body that occurs when your blood cells break down. Your body recycles old or damaged red blood cells. The hemoglobin turns into heme, which then turns into biliverdin. Biliverdin is green. Then, there is a substance called bilirubin, which is yellow. Bilirubin is what makes your urine yellow, and in certain situations, can turn the skin and eyes yellow. Bacteria helps oxidize bilirubin and turns it brown. Your stool should normally be brown from the bacterial oxidation of bilirubin.

In some situations, the hemoglobin breakdown chain-reaction doesn’t occur from the liver to the small intestine—it gets blocked because of maybe a gallstone or sludge. This blockage can cause the absence of pigment in the stool, making it pale-colored. So, pale-colored stool could mean you have a blockage in the bile ducts, or your liver isn’t producing bile. There can be a deeper problem, though, that usually has to do with the person’s diet.

What you could do if you have pale-colored stool:
• Take purified bile salts
• Fix your diet (healthy keto and intermittent fasting)
