Coronavirus Destroys Sense of Smell: Why?

There is an additional symptom of the coronavirus—the loss of smell. Why could this be happening?

0:49 The enzyme involved in taste and smell
1:09 Zinc and the loss of the sense of smell and taste
1:40 What causes anosmia?
4:33 Zinc is incredibly important

Today we’re going to talk about why the coronavirus causes the loss of smell.

Some coronavirus symptoms:
• Fever
• Tired
• Cough (dry)
• Shortness of breath
• Sore throat

Recently it has been found that there can be an additional symptom, and it’s the loss of smell. The medical name for a loss of smell is “anosmia.” You can also have a loss of taste.

What might cause this to happen?
There is a certain enzyme that’s involved in your perception of smell and taste. It’s called carbonic anhydrase 6. This essential enzyme for the sense of taste and smell is zinc-dependent. Big symptoms of a zinc deficiency are actually a loss of the sense of smell and a loss of the sense of taste.

I think the reason for the symptom of a loss of smell could be a zinc deficiency. When you go through an infection, especially in your lungs, you use up a lot of zinc. Zinc is not stored that well in the body. So, unless your constantly consuming zinc, chances are you’re going to be zinc deficiency. On top of that, with an infection, you could be even more zinc deficient.

Potential anosmia causes that could be connected to zinc:

• Upper respiratory infection
• Nasal polyp
• Idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism
• Hypothyroid
• Antibiotics
• Diabetes
• Cushing’s syndrome
• Cadmium poisoning
• Zinc deficiency
• Kallmann syndrome
• Primary ciliary dyskinesia

A loss of smell could potentially be because of a zinc deficiency. Taking zinc might not only help improve the sense of smell, but it also might help increase the strength of the immune system. Overall, zinc is a vitally important mineral.

In this short video, we’re going to talk about caffeine and hair growth. I’m not saying you should go and pour some coffee over your head. But, there is some research on the effects of caffeine for hair growth.

Interesting effects of caffeine:

1. Stimulating hair follicle growth
2. Counters the suppressive action of DHT (DHT blocks and suppresses hair growth)
3. Stimulates faster hair growth

*There are caffeinated shampoos that may work as a hair loss shampoo.

One reason some older men and women experience hair loss is because of their free testosterone going down. A lot of other problems can accompany a low testosterone issue. But, in this situation, zinc can also be very beneficial. Zinc is important in helping to regulate testosterone.

Key Reasons For a Zinc Deficiency

Zinc is really important for the immune system. Check out the key reasons for a zinc deficiency.

Today we’re going to talk about zinc. I want to cover the key zinc deficiency causes and the things that can help increase your absorption of zinc. I believe zinc is probably one of the most important trace minerals. Over 2 billion people are at least somewhat deficient in zinc.

The big problem with zinc is that we don’t store zinc very well. So, unless you’re consuming it every day, you could end up having a zinc deficiency.

Zinc can affect:

• The reproductive organs
• Skin health
• The immune system

Here are a couple of things that can decrease the absorption of zinc:

• Too much calcium
• Too much iron
• Excessive amounts of copper
• Phytates (bran, rice, grains, corn)
• Cadmium
• Casein
• Gut damage
• A lot of tannins
• A lot of sulfites
• Infection
• Refined sugar
• Stress

Here are a couple of things that can increase the absorption of zinc:

• Strong stomach acid
• Enough protein
• Red meat
• Shellfish (especially oysters)
• Nuts/Seeds
• Cheese

The amount of zinc you should consider getting per day is 8-13 mg.

2:15 What can prevent zinc absorption?

In this video, we’re going to talk about zinc and your immune system. Zinc is probably one of the most important trace minerals because it does so many different things. But, one of the most important health benefits of zinc is that it can help support the immune system.

Zinc is involved in:
• Genes and making DNA
• Many different enzymes
• Protein synthesis
• Wound healing
• Heart health
• Joint health
• Insulin
• Thymus function
• Gonads

What can happen in relation to your immune system if you have a zinc deficiency:
• Thymic atrophy
• Decreased lymphocytes
• Defective white blood cell response
• Low recovery rate
• Increased duration of infections
• Increased inflammation
• Increased oxidative stress
• Decreased capacity to fight off infections
• Increased susceptibility to viruses and infections

Foods high in zinc:
• Oysters
• Red meat
• Seafood/fish
• Pumpkin seeds

If you want to take zinc supplements, I think a good choice is zinc bisglycinate chelate.

There are certain things that can prevent the absorption of zinc, such as:
• Phytates
• Oxalates
• Antacids
• Malabsorption (pre-existing gut damage or inflammation)

Today we’re going to talk about why the sperm count is downtrending. From 1973 to 2011, sperm count has crashed down by 60%.

A few potential causes of low sperm count and low sperm motility:

1. Phthalates (from plastics)
2. Estrogen (from body fat or chemicals in the environment)
3. Insulin resistance (high levels of insulin can lower testosterone)
4. Statins (testosterone is made from cholesterol)
5. GMO foods (glyphosate)
6. Soy (soy has been directly associated with low sperm count)

How Coronavirus Targets Your Lungs –

2:13 What’s missing with COVID-19

Today we’re going to talk about the relationship between the coronavirus and your lungs.

The word “corona” comes from the word “crown.” The coronavirus has small projections that look like a little crown—the little projections like lung tissue.

In certain cases, especially critical coronavirus cases, a person can develop a condition called ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome). This is a situation where you have severe hypoxia, which means you have a lack of oxygen.

Other symptoms are:
• Rapid breathing
• Dizziness
• Breathlessness
• Sweating

What’s missing with COVID-19 is two nutrients:

1. Vitamin D
2. Zinc

90% of patients with ARDS have very low vitamin D levels.
• Vitamin D is an immune modulator
• It can help greatly improve the immune system
• It’s a great anti-inflammatory

Zinc is one of the most important nutrients for your lungs.
• It can help reduce inflammation
• If you’re deficient in zinc, an infection can last longer
• If you’re deficient in zinc, you’re more susceptible to infections, viruses, and bacteria
• If you’re deficient in zinc, you don’t have the full capacity of your white blood cells (your army)

Hidden Cause of Depression and Anxiety

Not many people know about this interesting hidden cause of depression and anxiety. Find out more.

3:53 More on the brain and gut connection

In this video, we’re going to talk about a hidden cause of depression and anxiety. It has to do with your microbiome—the good bacteria in your gut.

There is actually a connection between your brain and your colon through what’s called the vagus nerve. But, what’s interesting about the vagus nerve is that only 10% of the information is going from the brain to the colon. 90% of the information is going from the colon to the brain. So, you’re getting a lot of feedback in your brain from things that are happening in your gut.

The microbiome (your good bacteria) makes a lot of neurotransmitters, which are identical to the ones that your own body makes.

Your microbiome makes:
• Acetylcholine
• GABA
• Norepinephrine
• Serotonin
• Dopamine

All of these neurotransmitters can help make you feel calm, stress-free, and happy. If there is a problem with your microbes making these neurotransmitters, you might not feel that great.

This part of the nervous system is a part of what’s called the parasympathetic, which is all about rest, digestion, and recovery. It’s possible that things like depression and anxiety can occur if your gut is not right.

Your good bacteria also eat fiber from vegetables, and they make small-chain fatty acids. This is a specific type of fat that can provide 90% of the energy for the colon cells. It can also help improve insulin resistance and supports the integrity of the gut lining. There is a huge connection between your state of well being and your digestion.

On the flip side, if you’re stressed, this can also affect your digestion.

The brain and gut connection also control:

• Enzyme release
• Acid production
• Hormone release
• The muscles around the colon

Gut Bacteria and Viruses

There is a unique relationship between your gut bacteria and viruses. If you want to keep your immune system strong, you need to understand this connection.

1:59 What happens if you lack good bacteria
2:20 What your gut bacteria do
5:25 How to help keep your immune system strong

Today we’re going to talk about the relationship between your gut bacteria and viruses.

What is the gut microbiome?
Your gut microbiome is a combination of good bacteria and bad bacteria, such as:
• Bacteria
• Yeast
• Parasites
• Viruses

There is something called VLP (viral-like particles). You have a lot of these in and around your body. VLPs don’t have any genetics inside of the cell, but they are viral-like particles that exist throughout the body.

The human gut virome is clusters of viruses that live in your body, and there are a lot of them. You have a lot of bacteria in your body, possibly trillions. These viruses outnumber your bacteria by 10:1 and, in some cases, 20:1. These viruses typically don’t cause any problems unless you have lowered resistance or a medical problem that makes you more susceptible. This is why it’s important to keep your immune system strong.

You also have an army of immune cells that include not just white blood cells, but also your good bacteria.

If you’re lacking good bacteria, the bad bacteria can thrive. Also, if you’re eating foods that create a lot of inflammation, the inflammation can create a shift from good bacteria to bad bacteria.

Your good bacteria:
• Maintain the integrity of the intestinal barrier
• Keep inflammation down
• Compete for space and food (they don’t let the bad bacteria have enough space or food to live)
• Directly kill pathogens
• Enhance immunity
• There is a link between the gut bacteria and the respiratory tract
• Recycle and modify bile salts, which are antibacterial
• Has anti-viral properties

How to help keep your immune system strong in relation to your gut bacteria:
• Pathogens love sugar—especially candida (avoid sugar)
• Replenish your good bacteria (take periodic probiotics)
• Consume prebiotics (vegetable fiber)

Is Fasting Messing Up Your Sleep?

Have a hard time sleeping while fasting? This could be why!

11 Ways to Boost Melatonin:

1:18 Why fasting may cause poor sleep

Do you find that fasting interferes with your ability to sleep at night? Quite a few people have told me that their sleep isn’t as good at night while they’re doing intermittent fasting. I recently found some research on why this might be. Take a look.

In this study, the researchers found that energy restriction for 2-7 days caused decreased nocturnal secretion of melatonin by 20%.

What can you do about this? There are two things you can try:

1. You can add MCT oil to your diet. You want to have this just before bed.
2. Increase your carbs to 50g a day.

Try one of these and see how it affects your sleep.

The reason for this problem has to do with insulin resistance. You could have insulin resistance that has been there for a long time. This causes your brain to be starved of glucose. It can take your body time to adapt to ketones so that your energy, especially in the brain, isn’t restricted.

High Doses of Vitamin D Can Deplete Magnesium

High doses of vitamin D could cause a magnesium deficiency. Learn more about vitamin D and magnesium.

1:32 Magnesium deficiency side effects
2:12 Magnesium and Vitamin B6
2:44 The biggest danger
3:04 Magnesium-rich foods

Today we’re going to talk about vitamin D and magnesium. A lot of people are taking a good amount of vitamin D because of all of the amazing benefits of vitamin D, but high doses of vitamin D can deplete magnesium, which isn’t good.

Vitamin D is important for:

• The immune system
• Keeping calcium in the bone
• Decreasing inflammation

If you have large amounts of vitamin D over time without enough magnesium in your diet, this could intensify a magnesium deficiency. Vitamin D and magnesium work together. If you increase vitamin D, you could potentially decrease magnesium.

Magnesium has a very important function of keeping calcium from accumulating inside of the cells, kidneys, arteries, and joints. Magnesium is similar to vitamin K2 in that vitamin K2 helps keep calcium from building up in the soft tissues, but magnesium does that as well.

When you take high doses of vitamin D3 without magnesium, you could potentially end up with:

• Kidney stones
• Calcium buildup where it should not be

If you consume a good amount of vegetables every day, or you take a good magnesium supplement, you don’t have anything to worry about. Vitamin B6 is also very important and helps both vitamin D and magnesium work. But, again, if you’re doing healthy keto, you shouldn’t have to worry about this.

Possibly the biggest danger is if you’re a stone former and you take a lot of vitamin D without getting enough magnesium because this could potentially increase your risk of kidney stones.

Consuming at least 7 cups of vegetables per day will help you get the magnesium you need. Leafy greens and certain nuts are rich in magnesium.

Reduce Coronavirus with High Temperature and Humidity

Could a change in the weather help reduce coronavirus transmission? Check this out.

I’ve got some good coronavirus news for you today. There is a paper titled “High Temperature and High Humidity Reduce the Transmission of COVID-19.”

According to this paper, higher temperatures and higher humidity significantly reduce the spread of the coronavirus. This means that the arrival of summer and a rainy season may effectively decrease the spread of COVID-19.

This could make sense because when the coronavirus pandemic first began, certain countries that were warmer and more humid had fewer coronavirus cases than countries with a colder and less humid climate at the time.

In the next few months, as the temperature is warming up and the humidity is increasing, I think we may see a significant drop in the spread of the coronavirus.

The Side Effects of Calcium Carbonate You Need to Know

Are the side effects of calcium carbonate worth taking it? Here’s what you need to know.

1:24 Calcium carbonate uses—bone density
1:52 Calcium carbonate side effects
2:12 Contraindications to calcium carbonate
2:49 The dangers of calcium carbonate

Today we’re going to talk about the side effect of calcium carbonate. A lot of people take calcium carbonate, but they don’t know much about it.

The biggest thing you need to know is that calcium and other minerals need an acidic medium to be absorbed. If your stomach does not have the acidity you need, the calcium will not be absorbed well.

A lot of people take calcium carbonate for heartburn, and the calcium carbonate dries up the acid in the stomach over time. So not only is the calcium not being absorbed, but it also ends up actually causing heartburn. In my opinion, apple cider vinegar might be a better choice for GERD or heartburn. But, of course, check with your doctor.

Some studies show that high doses of calcium carbonate also do not increase bone density in osteoporosis. But, it did increase the risk of heart attacks.

Calcium carbonate may even lower the thyroid function and block a person’s ability to utilize T3 (the active form of thyroid hormone).

Side effects of calcium carbonate:

1. Loss of appetite
2. Constipation
3. Gas
4. Nausea
5. Vomiting
6. A decrease in hydrochloric acid (HCL)

Contraindications to calcium carbonate:

• Kidney stones
• Hypercalcemia
• Calcification
• A severe interaction with 210 drugs

A lot of people are taking massive doses of calcium carbonate, thinking that it will prevent bone loss when it could actually be creating other issues.

What is a Carbohydrate: Simplified

Wondering, “what is a carbohydrate, really?” Let me explain what you need to know.

Timestamps
0:20 What is a carbohydrate?
0:49 Monosaccharides
1:11 Disaccharides
2:00 Oligosaccharides
2:08 Polysaccharides

In this video, we’re going to talk about carbohydrates and sugars. I want to clear up some of the confusion around carbohydrates and sugars.

What are carbohydrates?
Carbohydrates are made up of sugars, starches, and fiber. The biochemical name for a carbohydrate is a saccharide. Carbohydrates are a compound of saccharides, and carbohydrates are classified by the number of saccharides. The Greek word for saccharides is “sugar.”

Monosaccharides—Mono means “single” or “one.” So a monosaccharide would be one saccharide. Monosaccharides are glucose, fructose, or galactose. This would be considered a simple sugar.

Disaccharides—Means two monosaccharides. An example would be table sugar or sucrose. Sucrose is composed of two monosaccharides: glucose and fructose. Disaccharides, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides make up complex carbohydrates.

Oligosaccharides—These are 3-9 monosaccharides.

Polysaccharides—Poly means “many.” This would be about ten or more monosaccharides. A few examples of polysaccharides would be starches like potatoes, rice, wheat, and corn. Fiber is also an example of a polysaccharide. Fiber helps decrease the absorption of sugar. Fiber also decreases the sugar response or sugar spike.
