Today, I want to cover slow versus fast metabolism. This data is taken from professor Benjamin Bikman who gave a talk on ketones at our recent keto summit. 

When you’re in ketosis, your fat cells are very inefficient. 

A person with a slow metabolism actually has a very efficient metabolism. They can get by on a very tiny amount of fuel. You don’t want your body to adjust and be able to run on a small amount of fuel.

A person in ketosis wastes a tremendous amount of fuel. It takes more oxygen to make less fuel. This is good because you have a lot of fuel to waste.

There are two studies I want to mention:

1. The first study relates ketosis to increase metabolism.
2. The second study relates lowering carbohydrates to speeding up a sluggish metabolism.

The main factor that controls your metabolism is insulin. Lowering insulin through healthy keto and intermittent fasting will speed up your metabolism.

Trying to get into weight loss with a slow metabolism is unnecessary. All it takes to boost your metabolism is an understanding of how to get into ketosis so you can drop insulin and your fat cells can be more inefficient.

Today, we’re going to talk about oxidation. 

What is oxidation?
Originally oxidation meant adding oxygen to a compound and losing an electron. When you lose an electron from an atom, you create a free radical. A free radical can cause damage to tissue, DNA, etc. Now the oxidation definition has expanded to the creation of free radicals without oxygen. 

An antioxidant donates an electron to make things more symmetrical and stabilizes the atom. 

When you have too much oxidation versus antioxidants, that’s called oxidative stress.

Examples of an oxidant:

• Glucose
• Vegetable oils
• Iron
• Pollution
• Chemicals
• Low antioxidants 

Vegetable oil is more like seed oil. It’s mostly GMO, highly processed, and has trace amounts of herbicide. It creates more free radicals, inflammation, and depletes antioxidants. 

In restaurants, these oils are sometimes used over and over. This highly processed and oxidized grease is then recycled and used in animal feed.

Today, let’s talk about the best anti-aging foods for the brain, so you can keep your brain young and healthy.

Here’s what you should know:

• Magnesium – magnesium helps restore synapses and increases their density. This improves memory, cognitive functioning, learning, and sleep.

• Iron – too much iron can cause harm to your brain. If you have high iron, lay off of any supplements and foods you may be consuming that have high iron content.

• Zinc – you need plenty of zinc to help prevent amyloid plaque. Amyloid plaque is what causes dementia.

• Cell phones – EMFs, which cellphones emit, are not good for your brain. Don’t hold your phone up to your head (use speakerphone) and don’t use Bluetooth headsets. Niacin (50 mg/day) can also help counter EMF radiation.

• Vegetable oil – corn oil, canola oil, cottonseed oil, and soy oil promote oxidation in the brain. Stay away from these. Use olive oil instead.

• B1 deficiency – if you are deficient in vitamin B1, this can cause a condition called Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. Symptoms include memory problems, apathy, vision issues, and problems with gait. Carbs, glucose, and high-fructose corn syrup burn up vitamin B1.

• Low Selenium – Low levels of selenium can cause high mercury, which leads to damage by oxidizing the brain.

Here are 5 things you should get more of:

1. Shellfish
DHA, which is an omega-3 fatty acid, makes up the majority of the brain. To supply your brain with plenty of DHA, you need to have plenty of shellfish and other fish like salmon. Shellfish are also a great source of zinc, copper, iodine, and selenium.

2. Sun
Sunlight is the best source of vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential for brain health. It helps reduce inflammation in the brain and improve sleep.

3. Greens
Dark leafy green vegetables contain nutrients that are vital to cognitive health like folate, magnesium, and potassium.

4. Keto + IF
Ketones are the brains preferred source of energy. If the body has ketones available, it will always take ketones first. A ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting will put your body in the state of ketosis and help supply your brain with energy. MCT oil is a great way to help increase your ketones.

5. Exercise
Hypoxia is a situation where you have low oxygen in certain parts of your brain. This can come from many things, including head trauma, strokes, and sleep apnea. You can help increase the oxygen to your brain by doing aerobic exercises like walking, riding your bicycle, or jogging every day. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy may also have some incredible benefits.

In this video, we’re going to talk about neck cracking. I want to answer the question, “is it bad to crack your own neck.”

In your neck, you have joints that are either hypermobile (move too much) or hypomobile (move too little). Most of the time, when you adjust yourself, you’re going to adjust the wrong one. This will cause you to feel like you need to keep popping your neck over and over. 

If you can find a competent and honest chiropractor, there is nothing better. 

If you have to go back for a chiropractic adjustment over and over, there may be another issue. It could be something with your diet or from referred pain. For example, if your gallbladder is a problem, it can refer pain up the right side and pull certain vertebrae out of place.

Today we’re going to talk about why your urine may give off a strong ammonia odor when you’re on keto.

Ammonia is a byproduct of protein. 

Normally, when you consume protein, some of it goes to the tissues, some of it is used as fuel, and the rest goes through your urine. If you have liver damage, this cycle gets interrupted, and you start building up too much ammonia which can back up in the blood and can be toxic.

There is another condition that will cause an ammonia odor in urine where you can have ammonia in the urine, and it’s not toxic. Acidic urine triggers the production of ammonia. Ammonia is extremely alkaline. On the keto diet, things become more acidic. To balance that out, your body makes more ammonia.

If your urine smells like ammonia while on keto, it’s not a bad thing. You don’t have anything to worry about if you don’t have liver damage.

What to do about ammonia odor in urine while on keto:
• You can increase the amount of vegetables you consume to increase your alkaline minerals.

Today, I want to talk to you about exercise. Should you do cardio for weight loss?

Exercise only contributes 15% of your results with weight loss. The majority of your results will come from diet.

There are basically two types of exercise for weight loss:

• Aerobic — Low Intensity (with oxygen)
• Anaerobic — High intensity (without oxygen)

Aerobic exercise:

An example would be walking.
• Fat burning effects occur after 25 minutes 
• Low-stress type of exercise 

Anaerobic exercise:

An example would be HIIT

• You’re working out 20-40 minutes
• Fat burning effects occur 24-48 hours after the workout during sleep

Some barriers you may run into:

• What you eat 
• Sleep (you need sleep)
• Quantity of exercise 
• Intensity (needs to be adjusted to your recovery)
• Frequency 
• Recovery (the benefit of exercise occurs in the recovery phase)
• Stress

Today, we’re going to talk about calorie restriction. Can calorie restriction slow aging?

You may have heard before that counting calories can have anti-aging effects. But, that conflicts with all of the people who have tried a low-calorie diet in the past. 
It has been proven that the more you diet and lower your calories, the more you end up gaining the weight back. It also destroys your metabolism over time.

If you’re doing a low-calorie diet with high carbs, you’re going to keep your blood sugars going up and down. If you do a low-calorie diet with low fat, you’re going to be hungry, and it’s not sustainable. 

The benefit of calorie restriction is epigenetics. 

The two epigenetic triggers for the benefits of calorie restriction are lowering glucose and lowering insulin. The benefits aren’t coming from restricting calories. The benefits are coming from restricting glucose and insulin.

The other problem with a low-calorie diet is that people lower their nutrients. This can create nutrient deficiencies which can lead to all kinds of problems.

I don’t recommend calorie restriction. I do recommend restricting glucose which will indirectly lower your insulin. I recommend the healthy ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting. This is a low carb, moderate protein, high-fat diet that is comfortable, sustainable, and provides a ton of health benefits including anti-aging effects.

Today we’re going to talk about knuckle cracking. Is it okay to crack your knuckles? Does cracking your knuckles cause arthritis?

Is knuckle cracking bad? No, not really. It may irritate the people around you, but knuckle popping won’t cause arthritis.

There are certain ways that are better than others when it comes to cracking your knuckles, and I’m going to show you how to pop your knuckles correctly in this video. 

The sound that’s made from knuckle cracking is caused by stretching the capsule around the joint that’s filled with fluid and gas is coming out of the liquid making a popping sound.

Today, I want to show you a wonderful neck stretch for whole-body relaxation. I’m going to go over this neck stretch for stress relief step-by-step. 

We’re going to be working with the skull and first vertebra. There is also a lot of ligaments involved in this.

Ligaments go from bone to bone. So, whether you had a tailbone injury or just gravity stress, we want to use this stretch to increase the space between the skull and the first vertebra. 

This relaxing stretch will provide a tremendous amount of relief, and will help the person:

• Sleep better 
• Breath better
• Feel taller
• Have more neck flexibility 
• Have less stress

Here are a few things to keep in mind as I show you step-by-step how to do this stretch for neck tension and stress relief:

• This vertebra is round so we’re going to be stretching at different angles.

• The back part of the skull is called the occiput. 

• The first vertebra is called the 1st cervical vertebrae (C1).

• You can’t do this neck exercise on yourself. 

• The neck stretching exercise will take a little time and practice.

• If you have a narrow thumb, you may need to go lighter and more gentle, or use part of your hand instead.

• Be very careful not to pull hair or stretch the hairline.

• You would not want to do this neck stretch if the person was involved in a head-on collision and their neck was thrust forward tearing ligaments at the base of the neck. This would make it worse. 

• If the neck stretch is painful to the person, try doing the same stretch but back instead of forward.

In this video, I want to answer the question, “is it possible to gain weight on fruits and vegetables?”

When talking about fruits and vegetables, and if it will cause weight gain, it really depends on the amount and frequency you’re consuming them. Overall, you can potentially gain weight by eating fruit, but not vegetables.

Vegetables and weight gain:

• It’s unlikely that you’re going to gain weight on vegetables. Of course, you will gain weight if you consume certain vegetables like potatoes.

• For example, 7 cups of a salad with other mixed vegetables would only give you 3.8 net carbs (extremely low). 

• You may get bloating or fluid retention from consuming vegetables which can cause weight gain but not fat gain. This is really due to a digestive issue, and you should cut back on the vegetables and switch them to other things. 

Fruits and weight gain:

• Yes, you can gain weight from eating fruits. But, again, it depends on the amount that you eat and the frequency. 

• Over the years, different fruits have been changed. In general fruit now is sweeter and contains more fructose. Fructose is metabolized differently, which can cause insulin resistance and fat around the midsection.

• Fruit does contain vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. But, as far as weight gain, fruit can cause you to gain weight.

In this video, I want to share with you a really simple massage technique. This skull massage is unlike anything you’ve probably seen on the internet before, and I’m going to show you how to do it step-by-step. 

This is a skull massage for deep relaxation that will help a person get restful sleep. This relaxing head massage helps melt away stress and promotes sleep by working the sagittal suture. 

• You can’t do this massage to yourself because you need to be fully relaxed.
• You shouldn’t do this massage to someone that has been hit on top of the head because you don’t want to press an old injury.

How to skull massage:

• Place your palm lightly on the person’s forehead to stabilize their head.
• Looking at the top of the head, with slight pressure, press your thumb at the bottom of the sagittal suture.
• Using traction, slowly work your way forward up the head continuing to press your thumb along the sagittal suture very carefully.

Today, I want to share with you my opinion on bone broth. 

Is bone broth healthy? In short, yes. 

People eat a lot of muscle from the animal, which contains high amounts of methionine. But, when you consume healthy bone broth, you’re getting glycine in a different profile of amino acids. I also recommend consuming some organ meats like liver. 

The benefits of bone broth mainly come from glycine, which can help with:

• Sleep 
• Blood sugars
• Neurotransmitters

Other benefits of bone broth relate to gut health and joint support.

A convenient option is to buy a pre-made bone broth. One of my favorites is from a company called Kettle & Fire. Or, you can follow this easy bone broth recipe below. 

Ingredients:
• 3 pounds of bones (I like to get this from the farmer’s market)
• Water (2-gallon pot)
• 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar 
• Add herbs/spices/vegetables/sea salt

Fill the 2-gallon pot with water about 2 inches from the top. Add the bones and the apple cider vinegar. Let sit for 30 minutes. Add your chosen herbs/spices/vegetables/sea salt. 

Bring the contents of the pot to a boil and then turn the heat down to a simmer. Let it simmer for 10-24 hours. The longer you let it simmer, the more nutrients are extracted. 

Let the keto bone broth cool and then strain out the contents into glass jars. I like to use the homemade bone broth in different soups or stews.

In this video, we’re going to cover what you need to know about a protein deficiency. I want to fill you in on what causes protein deficiency, the different signs of protein deficiency, and what you can do if you have a protein deficiency. 

Protein deficiency symptoms:

• Sick often
• Delayed healing
• Lack of muscle growth
• Poor recovery
• Weak connective tissue
• Bone loss
• Low neurotransmitters 
• Low hormones 
• Low enzymes
• Can’t detox
• Poor sleep

Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. The purpose of consuming protein is to get amino acids.

The purpose of amino acids are:

1. Muscle repair
2. Neurotransmitter precursors 
3. Raw material for biological proteins (enzymes, hormones, detox, DNA)

In this video, I want to answer a few questions about hormesis. What does hormesis mean, and how does hormesis work? 

What is hormesis? — Hormesis is a condition where you’re adding some stress or some toxicity in a small amount, and it’s very beneficial, compared to a larger amount where it becomes toxic. 

Hormesis examples:

• Exercise can be very beneficial and can make you fit over time. However, if you’re 50 or 60 years old and you haven’t been working out, and you do Crossfit for two hours, you’re going to have a toxic effect from that. 

• Fasting is very beneficial in a certain amount. But, if you fast for too long, you could end up having a toxic effect. 

• Phytonutrients are very beneficial in a small amount. However, if you consume a concentrated amount of foods with phytonutrients, it can have a toxic effect. 

• The way your body reacts to a small amount of heat or cold can be beneficial. For example, if you were to get in a sauna or take a cold shower. But, too much heat or too much cold can be a problem. 

• Very small amounts of alcohol may be beneficial. But, too much alcohol can be toxic. 

• A small amount of UV light is great, too much is bad.

Other examples of hormesis would be having too much:

• Estrogen
• Cortisol
• Growth hormone
• Thyroid hormone
• Insulin 
• Nutrients
