In this video, we’re going to talk about how to get more REM sleep. During a good night’s sleep, you will go through four to six 90-minute cycles of sleep. There are four stages in each cycle. These are broken up into NREM (non-REM) and REM.

NREM is the deeper form of sleep that helps with body repair, detoxification, rejuvenation, and an increase in growth hormone. NREM sleep typically happens earlier in the cycle, and REM sleep happens later in each cycle.

REM sleep is more superficial. This is where most people have a problem. REM sleep is where you get your mental repair—It’s important for memory and learning. Many people don’t get the full REM sleep they need to support their minds. REM sleep is very similar to being awake. In fact, it can use up even more energy than you use while you’re awake. In REM sleep, you are more sensitive to temperature. So if your environment is too cool or warm, it can inhibit REM sleep.

In summary, NREM sleep is for physical rejuvenation, and REM sleep is for mental rejuvenation. The question is, what can you do to improve your REM sleep? I have five remedies you can use. Take a look.

1. Relax the muscle around your brainstem
2. Get your breathing balanced
3. Adjust your blanket
4. Increase acetylcholine (vitamin B1/nutritional yeast)
5. Reduce stress – this is the biggest barrier to sleep

Have you noticed a few grey hairs recently? Here’s why stress makes your hair grey and what to do about it.

Timestamps

0:16 Causes of grey hair
0:35 Why stress causes grey hair
1:55 What to do for grey hair caused by stress
2:16 Share your success story!

Let’s talk about how stress can potentially turn your hair grey. Of course, other things can cause grey hair, like the normal aging process and genetic factors. But, there are epigenetic factors, which are above your genes, and you may be able to do something about your genes through your nutrition, environment, and more. But what about premature greying because you’re going through too much stress?

In the hair follicle, you have stem cells, which create pigment. When exposed to chronic stress, you get an elevation of noradrenaline. Noradrenaline is the precursor of adrenaline.

They found that noradrenaline causes stem cells to migrate away from the hair root and into the skin. So, you lose your stem cells and, with them, the ability to keep your hair pigmented. The key is to keep your stress low.

How to keep your stress low:
• Sleep more
• Exercise more
• Take vitamin B1 regularly (nutritional yeast)
• Identify the cause of the stress and do something about it

Epigenetics:

There is a gene in your body right now that can help protect you against disease, especially cancer. Check this out.

2:15 Epigenetics

3:38 Share your success story!

Let’s talk about an important gene that can help protect you from disease, including cancer. The name of this gene is Nrf-2 (nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor-2).

This gene triggers hundred of other genes that have a function of cytoprotection. They protect the cell. This gene is coined master of the antioxidant response element (ARE). Basically, it activates a lot of antioxidants in your body.

There are external antioxidants, and then there are internal (endogenous) antioxidants that your body makes. This gene regulates the endogenous antioxidant genes. It also helps regulate the detoxification genes and the genes that control inflammation.

Many different health conditions, including cancer, can occur because there is some type of mitochondrial dysfunction. If there is any mitochondrial dysfunction, the Nrf-2 machinery kicks in and starts to neutralize the oxidation and free radicals that are coming from the carcinogens. This can help you avoid DNA damage and disease.

It has been found that certain people have overexpression of this gene—it’s more activated. That could be why some people can do things like eat junk food, smoke, and drink, and still live a long time.

There are people who have a normal expression of this gene. These people are prone to disease and cancer to a certain degree. Then, there are people who have an underexpression of this gene who are very prone to getting cancer.

The good news is that there are genes, which you’re not defined as, and then you have epigenetics, which is above genetics. Epigenetics control the genes.

This means that even though your genes are telling the body to do a certain thing, if the epigenetic factors are active, that can overcome the expression of that gene.

You have to work harder at improving your epigenetics. This means you need to work on:
• Avoiding certain chemicals in your environment
• Keeping your exercise consistent
• Keeping your stress level in check
• Getting consistent, good, high-quality sleep
• Consuming certain foods that naturally have high levels of antioxidants that you can benefit from (cruciferous vegetables and more)

5:18 Share your success story!

In this video, we’re going to talk about what to do if you’re in need of a new liver.

There are around 15,000 people on the liver transplant list in the US today.

I want to share some information that you might find useful in the meantime while you’re waiting for a new liver.

Liver cells have a huge tolerance for injury. Liver cells also have a massive capacity to regrow and repair themselves.

The liver has some key functions…
• Biochemical defense against toxic chemicals
• Makes proteins
• Makes bile
• Stores vitamins
• Very important in brain health (liver damage can potentially contribute to dementia)

There are three things that can destroy a liver:
1. Inflammation
2. Insulin resistance
3. Scar tissue (cirrhosis)

When this damage happens, the liver begins to enlarge. This enlargement of the liver can cause referred pain in your right shoulder and neck.

A damaged liver can have a difficult time releasing bile, which can cause the bile to back up and cause more inflammation.

The question is, how much liver damage is too much for your liver to recover from?

I’ve had patients come into my office that had liver damage to the point that they were on the transplant list—some of them were able to undo the damage enough that they didn’t need to be on the list. Though this is an uncommon situation, it does happen.

Oftentimes, when you’re on the transplant list, they don’t tell you what you can do in the meantime to support your body’s natural function.

What’s the most important thing to do for the liver?

The most important thing to do for your liver is to lower your carbohydrates. Why?

A high-carbohydrate diet contributes to inflammation, fatty liver disease, and cirrhosis.

Healthy Keto and intermittent fasting are great for lowering inflammation, reducing scar tissue, and taking fat off the liver.

If you’re not familiar with Healthy Keto, check out some of the other videos here on my channel.

Research shows that a high-fat, low-carb diet can help reduce liver fat.

The best fats to have on keto are:
• Egg yolks
• Omega 3s
• Olive oil

Avoid omega-6 fatty acids and stick to a moderate to low amount of protein.

In this video, we’re going to talk about animals that are resistant to diseases that kill humans. This is a fascinating topic, and I’d like to share this interesting information with you.

Take a look.

Elephants – Elephants have 100x more cells than humans, but they have incredibly low rates of cancer. Why? Scientists found 20 copies of the TP53 gene, which suppresses tumor cells. Humans only have 1 of these genes. The TP53 gene is known as the “guardian of the genome.”

Naked mole rats – Naked mole rats are also protected from cancer. This is due to having extremely high levels of something called hyaluronan, which can cage cancer cells. They are also protected from hypoxia (a lack of oxygen). This is likely due to living underground most of their lives. Naked mole rats have special protection against oxidative stress due to a high-expressed gene called Nrf. The Nrf gene is the “master of oxidative stress protection.” We also have this gene, and it helps protect us from disease in extreme environments.

Bears – Bears become diabetic when they hibernate. When they awaken, their diabetes goes away. This is because their insulin levels drop to a minimum to tap into their fat reserves during hibernation. This is a similar effect that happens while you’re on Healthy Keto.

Chimpanzees – Chimpanzees use certain leaves to protect themselves against pathogens. They roll these leaves around in their mouths, which helps kill bacteria, fungus, and parasites.

1:25 Health benefits of citrus

Today I want to cover the health benefits of citrus. Oranges and grapefruit contain too much sugar, so we’re going to focus on lemons and limes. Citrus fruits have a lot of phytonutrients, but we’re going to mainly talk about flavonoids.

One type of flavonoid is the bioflavonoid, which is a part of the vitamin C complex. It’s essential in supporting healthy gums. It’s important to get the majority of your vitamins from your food so that you get the whole vitamin complex.

For example, you get the whole vitamin C complex from citrus, rather than just the ascorbic acid you would get from a synthetic vitamin C supplement.

You can get phytonutrient benefits from citrus fruit and the leaves, roots, and flowers of the lemon and lime trees.

Nutrients in lemons and limes:
• Vitamin B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9
• Calcium
• Iron
• Magnesium
• Potassium
• Zinc

I wouldn’t depend on lemons and limes to get the vitamins and minerals you need. But they are a fantastic source of flavonoids.

Health benefits of citrus:
• Anticancer properties
• Antibacterial properties
• Antiviral properties
• Antifungal properties
• Antidiabetic properties
• Decreased CNS disorders
• Decreased formation of kidney stones
• Decreased risk of gout
• Citrus can potentially act as a diuretic
• Increased bile
• Increased peristalsis
• Citrus can help support the liver
• Citrus may help counter constipation

The vitamin C in citrus can also potentially help a person get rid of scurvy, which is a severe vitamin C deficiency. A few symptoms of scurvy are frequent infections, frequent colds, cracked lips, and cracked corners of the mouth. Spongy, bleeding gums is another big symptom of scurvy.

It’s important to keep in mind that when you consume sugar, you can’t absorb vitamin C. Smoking will also block vitamin C absorption.

Here’s what you need to know about tryptophan vs. melatonin for sleep.

1:23 Psychiatric medication and tryptophan
2:18 Don’t make this mistake
2:50 Can I get tryptophan from turkey?

Tryptophan vs. melatonin for sleep, which is better? I believe tryptophan is better for sleep than melatonin. Let’s talk about why.

When you take melatonin to help you sleep, you’re actually taking a hormone. Over a period of time, you could end up needing more and more of this hormone to create the same effect.

Instead, you could try taking the precursor to melatonin called tryptophan. Tryptophan is an amino acid that turns into 5-HTP, which turns into serotonin, which then turns into melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that induces sleep, and it’s stimulated by darkness.

Benefits of tryptophan:
• It has virtually no side-effects
• It can act as a natural antidepressant
• It has anxiolytic properties (anti-anxiety)
• It can promote sleep

However, if you’re on any psychiatric medications, talk to your doctor before taking tryptophan. You don’t want to end up in a situation where you have too much serotonin. You also don’t want to come off of medication too quickly or add something else to the mix that could create an imbalance.

When you take tryptophan, you always want to take it on an empty stomach. Tryptophan competes with other amino acids. Anytime you take tryptophan with another protein, it won’t work.

Turkey doesn’t make people tired because of tryptophan. People get tired on Thanksgiving because they consume a lot of carbs with their turkey. Any time you combine carbs with protein, you’re going to spike insulin, and that will make you tired.

2:44 Share your success story!

In this video, we’re going to talk about a loss of smell related to covid-19.

Covid-19-related loss of smell seems to be very common. Along with a loss of smell, many also have a loss of taste or an altered sense of taste.

80% of your taste is related to your sense of smell.

The olfactory bulb is a large mass of nerves in the brain that have receptors in your sinuses that pick up information and pull it into the brain. This is what allows your brain to interpret what scents are in the environment.

The olfactory bulb has an important immune function. It has to protect the central nervous system from viruses that are introduced into your sinuses from your environment.

Respiratory viruses, like covid-19, can cause inflammation that damage the nerves in the olfactory bulb.

The virus itself is not the cause of this inflammation. It’s your immune system that creates inflammation.

The question is, what can you do about this problem?

A technique known as smell retraining therapy (SRT) has been shown to help restore the sense of smell lost due to viral respiratory infections.

SRT is a natural therapy that uses essential oils to help retrain your sense of smell.

You can use the following essential oils:
• Rose (floral)
• Lemon (fruity)
• Clove (spicy)
• Eucalyptus (resinous)

Here’s how it works: take a sniff of each oil separately for 10 to 20 seconds, 1 to 2 times each day, being careful not to allow any of the smells to mix.

SRT helps regrow nerves that are involved in the sense of smell.

Let me know in the comments below if smell retraining therapy works for your covid-19-related loss of smell.

So, what is the most unhealthy diet in the world? It’s hospital food. A hospital is a place where you go to heal and recover, but I believe it’s the worst place to go to recover.

Hospital meals are constructed with dietary concerns in mind. But, the problem is that whoever created these meal plans is operating off of false information.

Hospitals contract out meals with companies who specialize in preparing institutional food, like the food they serve in prisons, school systems, and government agencies. These foods are meant for high volume and low cost. They’re also typically pre-packaged and pre-cooked.

I believe hospital foods are definitely not recovery foods. They’re inflammatory foods. Fasting or bringing your own food if you’re in the hospital may be the best way to go.

The macros of typical hospital foods:
• Protein: 10-35%
• Carbs: 45-65%
• Fat: 30% or less (saturated fat: 10% or less)

Hospitals serve:
• Foods that have no trans fat
• Low sodium foods
• 100% fruit juice
• 1% non-fat dairy
• Milk substitutes (like soy)
• Yogurt (less than 30g of sugar per 8oz.)
• Low sodium cheese
• Whole wheat and whole-grain foods
• Dinner rolls, muffins, bagels, tortillas (must contain less than 290mg of sodium)
• Cereal (must contain less than 215mg of sodium)
• Dried cranberries and raisins (these are not included in the total sugar amount)
• Canned beef and vegetables (must contain less than 290mg of sodium)
• Frozen French toast (must contain less than 480mg of sodium)
• Snacks (should be added to help curve hunger)
• At least five servings of vegetables per week

In this video, we’re going to talk about why it seems that everyone is getting shingles.

Shingles is a viral infection caused by a virus called herpes zoster, the same virus that causes chickenpox. This virus often lays dormant for many years before creating a severe and painful rash.

Normally, 1.5 to 2.5 out of 1000 people will have shingles on average. However, from 2000 to 2007, there was an average of 3 cases of shingles per 1000 people.

In certain areas, this number can be even higher.

Shingles hides in your nerves in a dormant state until you experience a suppression of immunity.

If your immune system is weakened in any way, you can potentially develop shingles if you have the virus.

Someone with a strong immune system is less likely to have a severe case of shingles.

Certain things can be a trigger for this virus coming out of remission and causing shingles, including:

1. Cancer and asthma drugs
2. Prednisone
3. Radiation
4. Stress
5. A poor diet
6. A lack of sleep
7. Pesticides and insecticides

In more recent years, our exposure to pesticides has increased significantly. I believe that this is causing poor immune function and increased cases of shingles.

The best things to help detoxify the harmful pesticides in your body are:
• Fasting
• Vitamin D
• Vitamin C
• Zinc
• L-Lysine
• Melatonin
• Cruciferous vegetables (especially radish)

Is there something that could act as natural ibuprofen? There is some great data that demonstrates that a chemical in extra virgin olive oil can potentially mimic the effects of ibuprofen. But, be sure to check with your doctor before coming off of any medications.

The natural anti-inflammatory chemical in extra virgin olive oil gives you a strong stinging sensation in the back of your throat. If this doesn’t happen when you consume olive oil, it may not be good authentic extra virgin olive oil.

You would want to consume 50 milligrams or 1.7 ounces of extra virgin olive oil to potentially get this effect. Putting it on your salad every day would be a great idea.

You would get about 60-90% absorption, which comes out to about 9 mg. You may want to do this every day if you are prone to inflammation.

If you’re getting inflammation, you may be consuming too many carbohydrates in your diet. Getting on the Healthy Keto diet and intermittent fasting would be a great place to start getting rid of inflammation.

The natural compound in olive oil may also help reduce the plaquing that develops when you have Alzheimer’s. It also has anti-cancer effects.

Today we’re going to talk about how fasting may be beneficial for fear-related disorders, like anxiety, panic attacks, PTSD, and phobias. Fear is an emotion that helps us survive, but it’s not good when the body is in a chronic state of fear.

I believe one of the most powerful things you can do is fasting. There are many different things fasting can do for the brain, immune system, and mood. It can potentially elevate your mood from a chronic state of anxiety or fear to a much higher state.

Fasting is a survival mechanism that helps you survive in times of danger and tends to counter the fear emotion. It supports the adrenal glands, a structure in the brain called the amygdala, and the sympathetic nervous system.

The amygdala has a lot to do with fear. The sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) is located inside the adrenal glands and mid-back nerves. Some studies show that fasting may help the adrenal glands, amygdala, and sympathetic nervous system.

Potential benefits of fasting for fear-related disorders:
• It may help improve a person’s mood
• It increases GABA
• It increases dopamine
• It reduces cortisol
• It reduces the fight or flight mechanism by improving sympathetic nervous system dominance

How to do fasting for fear-related disorders:
• Don’t eat if you’re not hungry, especially in the morning
• Do two meals a day (lunch and dinner) with zero snacking
Step 1. Do intermittent fasting without changing your diet
Step 2. Do intermittent fasting with the healthy keto diet

How to enhance intermittent fasting:
• Take MCT oil
• Take B vitamins, especially vitamin B1 (take nutritional yeast)
• Add more fat to your meals

In this video, we’re going to talk about the most common cause of hypoglycemia.

Common symptoms of hypoglycemia include:
• Dizziness
• Cravings
• Lightheadedness
• Sweating
• Lethargy
• Irritability

If you’re diabetic, blood sugar levels below 70mg/dl are considered hypoglycemia. If you’re not a diabetic, blood sugar levels below 50mg/dl are considered hypoglycemia.

There are many types of hypoglycemia.
• Idiopathic hypoglycemic: unknown cause
• Idiopathic postprandial hypoglycemic: symptoms of hypoglycemia without low blood sugars
• Adrenal-related hypoglycemia: hypoglycemia due to abnormal adrenal function
• Hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia: related to high insulin

Hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia is the most common form of hypoglycemia.

Hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia may be caused by:
• Insulin injections
• Tumors
• Autoimmune disease
• Drugs
• Genetics

However, the most common cause of hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia is really excessive carbohydrate consumption, which causes inulin resistance.

High carbs will boost your blood glucose, which will trigger a huge spike in insulin.

Over time, your body tries to protect itself from insulin by developing insulin resistance. This is where the insulin receptors in your cells become resistant to insulin molecules.

In turn, your insulin level rises even more. This cycle continues until you stop spiking your insulin with carbohydrates.

Eventually, your pancreas will wear out and produce far less insulin, which causes high blood sugar, which turns into pre-diabetes and diabetes.

Today, I’m going to talk about why I don’t recommend doing a water fast or dry fast.

Water fasting:
A water fast is a fast where you’re not eating any food; you’re just drinking water. During a water fast, you don’t drink coffee or taking supplements.

Dry fasting:
A dry fast is where you’re not eating or even drinking water.

I don’t recommend dry fasting or water fasting because so many people have nutritional deficiencies. Our bodies don’t have the mineral reserves to go a long period of time without food. If you have deficiencies going into a water fast without taking supplements, you could have various symptoms.

Symptoms you could experience while water fasting:
• Weakness
• Feeling sick
• Feeling faint
• Digestive problems

I encourage people to take supplements, including vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids, while fasting. You can also consume vegetable broth that you make at home to help you replenish some of the minerals you need.

You would simmer the vegetables for 90 minutes and add high-quality sea salt. Then you would strain out the fiber and drink the broth. I recommend drinking 2.5 liters of this broth per day. You can also have it as a soup.

Nutrient-dense foods that you can use to make vegetable broth:
• Kale
• Swiss chard
• Celery
• Parsley
• Radish
• Ginger
• Onion
• Garlic
• Turmeric
• Leeks
• Endive
• Peppers
• Cabbage
• Bok choy

Benefits of drinking vegetable broth while fasting:
• Replenish your minerals
• Feel better
• Curb your appetite
• Offset the acidity that occurs when doing keto
