Did you know that cavities are the second most common disease worldwide? The root word for cavity means “hole.” There is a hole in your tooth. The bone is dissolving and breaking down to the point where there is a hole in it.Â
The teeth are actually supposed to be indestructible. You don’t have cells that are constantly being replaced on the enamel. But, there is one thing that will destroy your teeth. It’s a certain type of bacteria. There are a lot of friendly bacteria that live in the mouth. As you consume sugar and other carbohydrates that can ferment, the population of this type of bacteria starts going higher and higher until it’s dominant. When it ferments sugar, it creates acid, which dissolves the bone creating a hole.Â
When you consume certain refined carbohydrates and sugar, you’re feeding the bad microbes, and you’re getting the plaque-forming bacteria, which then causes decay because it’s creating an acid.Â
Are brushing and using fluoride really enough to prevent cavities? What about the food we eat?Â
There is actually a condition called fluorosis. When you expose a young child to too much fluoride, it can weaken the teeth. It can affect calcium metabolism in the body. The best thing to do may be to cut out sugar.Â
