In this short video, we’re going to talk about soap vs. alcohol, which is better as an antiviral?

Alcohol (60%):

Alcohol can help inactivate many different microbes, including viruses. But, I believe you should really only use alcohol gel if you don’t have soap available because soap is more effective.

Soap:

A virus has a fat layer as its envelope. Soap is a detergent. It’s half fat and half alkaline salt. Soap is an interesting combination of fat-soluble and water-soluble. It can break down the fat layer of the virus. Not only can it destroy the virus, but it can also separate it from your hands. Alcohol can’t release the virus from your hands.

Today we’re going to talk about pink eye (conjunctivitis) and the best pink eye remedy. 

Conjunctivitis, better known as pink eye, could be viral or bacterial. Bacterial cases of pink eye tend to be higher in young children, but it could be viral as well. In this video, we’re going to focus on the potential viral cause of pink eye. 

Symptoms of conjunctivitis (pink eye):

• Itchy eyes
• Watery eyes 
• Red eyes
• Swollen eyelids
• Burning eyes
• Light sensitivity 

Much of the time, what we’re dealing with in this situation is a virus called the adenovirus. This is actually the same virus that’s behind the common cold. There are 50 different strains of this virus, and there are really no medical treatments to cure it. 

Typically in this situation, a person is susceptible to the virus, their immune system is already weakened, the person gets exposed to the virus, and then it gets into the eye—causing inflammation. Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the membrane on the outside of the eyeball as well as the inside of the eyelid. Conjunctivitis is highly contagious and can remain contagious for 10-12 days. The infection can actually last between one and three weeks.

A potential natural remedy for pink eye:

• Zinc (50mg per day)

Zinc can help decrease the reproduction of the virus. If you take zinc to late in the chain of events, it may not do much to the virus because the virus is already into its reproduction cycle. It could be best to take zinc right away. 

It may also be beneficial to support the body with a healthy diet and let the virus run its cycle.

Today we’re going to talk about LDL and keto. I’m going to explain why your LDL or total cholesterol would go up when’s starting the keto diet. 

For most people, when starting the ketogenic diet, their LDL will go down and not up. If it does go up, it’s not as common, but I don’t believe it’s a problem. 

LDL is not cholesterol. It’s low-density lipoprotein. LDL acts like a carrier boat that travels the cholesterol through the blood. LDL is not bad. LDL takes the cholesterol from the liver and puts it into the tissues. HDL takes the cholesterol from the tissues and puts it into the liver. 

The body needs cholesterol for hormones and cellular membranes. Your body makes a lot of cholesterol, and you also get cholesterol from the diet. Typically, when a person consumes more fat in their diet, the body makes less cholesterol. 

In an interesting study done by Stephen Phinney, he talked about how cholesterol is also stored in the fat cell in a certain amount. When you do the ketogenic plan, and you lose weight, the fat cell shrinks. In the first phases of this process, you could release triglycerides, but the body tends to hold on to the cholesterol to a certain point. This could explain why you could start the keto plan, and your cholesterol or LDL is good but then spikes later on.

Cholesterol is not used as fuel in the body. The fat cell is mostly triglycerides, which can be used as fuel. What he found in the study was that eventually, the cholesterol is released and goes into the liver, combines with bile, gets dissolved, and goes out through the intestine. 

Another reason it may go up is simply that you’re consuming a higher fat diet, and you have more fat circulating throughout the body.

There are two types of LDL:

Type A—is a very large type. 
Type B—is a small and dense type. 

Type B is the type that can potentially invade the artery walls and create inflammation and damage. Type B comes from consuming a high carbohydrate diet. Type A comes from doing a high-fat, low-carb diet. When you get on a high-fat diet and lower your carbs, you may have more type A LDL. 

An advanced test (advanced lipid panel) can differentiate between the two types of LDL and give you more knowledge as to what’s going on.  

How to help lower LDL:

• Consume more fiber in the form of vegetables
• Reduce some of the extra fat you consume (not below 75g)

Sleep Deprivation and Your Immune System

Today we’re going to talk about sleep and how sleep deprivation can affect your immune system. Your immune system is highly influenced by your sleep cycles. If you’re not sleeping, your immune system is not going to work as it should. 

When you sleep, you stimulate growth hormone. Growth hormone is intimately involved with proteins, and your entire immune system is made out of proteins. 

Sleep deprivation will cause you to have higher levels of cortisol and adrenaline. Both of these, if spiked chronically, will suppress the immune system.

The rhythm of sleep is called circadian waves. The strength of your macrophages is highly dependent on your sleep cycles. These basically eat up harmful microbes and protect you against invaders. 

Certain T cells and cytokines peak right when you start to fall asleep, while others will peak during the day. For example, killer T cells peak during the day. When you don’t get sleep, and you’re more tired during the day, these cells can’t protect you as well. The speed at which the white blood cells fight infection and the memory of immune function will also be suppressed. 

If your body can’t remember certain pathogens or fight infection, then you’re going to be more susceptible to getting sick.

Why Are You Squashing Your Immune System?

Today we’re going to talk about whether or not it’s a good or bad idea to suppress the infection cycle. 

Let’s say you’re healthy, relatively young, you don’t have pre-existing health problems, but you start having a fever, muscle aches, flu-like symptoms, a runny nose, and cough. Should you automatically start taking medications and antibiotics to suppress the symptoms, or not? 

When a virus first invades the body, its goal is to get inside of the cell. When it’s in the cell, it releases its RNA or DNA into your cellular machinery. Once it gets into your cellular machinery, it starts to take over the copy machine so it can mass produce. When it does that, your body doesn’t have access to that copy machine. Now, as the blueprints are copied, they’re sent to other machinery to reproduce the actual cell. When the virus is replicated, it can be released through the cell. 

There are certain proteins that can detect the virus. They go to the surface of the cell and signal other parts of the immune system to let them know there’s a virus. It does the signaling through certain cytokines. A cytokine is really a communication that’s sent out to the immune system. There are different cytokines for different things. 

The signal from the cytokine will trigger a very powerful antiviral cytokine called interferon. Interferon is a chemical that triggers certain symptoms of a virus infection. 

It may not always be best to suppress these symptoms because you’ll also suppress interferon. Interferon can interfere with the virus reproducing. If you’re healthy, relatively young, and you don’t have pre-existing health problems, it may be best to support the immune system and not suppress it. 

How to help support the immune system:

1. Lower your carbohydrates
2. Vitamin D
3. Vitamin C
4. Zinc 
5. Lower stress
6. Stay hot
